Big Big Train - Ingenious Devices - 2 LP 180 Gr. Sky Blue Vinyl Ltd. Ed.
BIG BIG TRAIN Ingenious Devices(2023 Limited Edition UK 5 Track double LP pressed on Blue Vinyl. This richly crafted and deeply evocative release stands as a heartfelt celebration of history, innovation andthe human spirit and gathers together a series of beautifully realised tracks and extended pieces, showcasing the band’s gift for storytelling and their unmistakable pastoral prog sound. Guided by the warm, expressive vocals of David Longdon, the album unfolds like a collection of musical vignettes — each song rooted in real lives and moments from Britain’s industrial and cultural past. Whether reflecting on pioneering engineers, wartime resilience or everyday ingenuity, the narratives are delivered with sensitivity and quiet grandeur. Musically, Ingenious Devices blends lush keyboards, melodic guitar work and stately brass arrangements, all underpinned by a rhythm section that favours subtlety over excess. Greg Spawton’s compositional vision is evident throughout, balancing progressive complexity with accessible, emotionally resonant melodies. Highlights include extended rerecorded versions of fan favourites such as ‘East Coast Racer’ and ‘Brooklands’, allowing the band’s arrangements to fully breathe and develop, while additional material enriches the album’s thematic scope and also contains a live cut by the current line up recorded at Friars in Aylesbury . The production is warm and detailed, perfectly complementing the band’s nostalgic yet forward-looking aesthetic. Presented in a beautifully designed sleeve that reflects its themes of invention and heritage, Ingenious Devices is more than a compilation — it’s a cohesive and rewarding listening experience. A testament to Big Big Train’s ability to marry history with melody, this LP remains an essential addition for collectors and admirers of modern progressive rock, gatefold picture sleeve and lyric/credits insert.
