HELICOPTER OF THE HOLY GHOST's latest album, Aftersin, is a dizzying trip through the corridors of avant-garde rock. This London-based band has always straddled the line between chaos and ecstasy, but on Aftersin, they fully embrace the madness. From the opening track, "Ectoplasmic Rapture," to the closing number, "Rituals of the Outer Void," HELICOPTER OF THE HOLY GHOST take us on a sonic journey that is equal parts exhilarating and disorienting. The band's signature blend of psych-rock, post-punk, and noise pop is on full display here, creating a sound that is uniquely their own. Lead singer Astral Aura's vocals soar and snarl in equal measure, weaving tales of cosmic horror and existential dread. The guitars buzz and squeal, the drums thunder and crash, and the synthesizers whirr and hum, creating a cacophony of sound that is thrilling in its unpredictability. At times, Aftersin veers dangerously close to self-indulgence, with tracks like "The Transdimensional Freakout" threatening to collapse under the weight of their own madness. But just when you think the album has gone off the rails, HELICOPTER OF THE HOLY GHOST pull it back from the brink, reminding us that sometimes the most interesting art comes from pushing boundaries and breaking rules. In the end, Aftersin is a challenging listen, but one that rewards those willing to take the journey. HELICOPTER OF THE HOLY GHOST may not be for everyone, but for those who are willing to embrace the chaos, the payoff is well worth it.
